Profile of the Yilan County Government

After the Yilan County Government removed to the new site at Hopin Road in 1997, the original building has been dismantled as an extent of grassland. The building of the county government in South-Gate Park had been planed since the 37th year of Minchin (A.D.1904). Because the Yi Lan then was a “Tin” (a unit of government), it has been named as Yi Lan Tin (or County). The whole construction had been completed at the 39th year of Minchi (A.D. 1906).

Yi Lan had officially been set as the “County” in 1950, changing Yilan Tin into Yilan County. In 1974, reconstructed as a four-story build built by reinforce concrete. According to grandpa Chiang, the Yilan County Government then was the highest building in while Yilan territory. We don’t know if the Yilan County Government then was as so magnificent as the 101 building at Taipei now…even visit it with the touring bus.

Stele of Founding Autonomy

The County Government’s relic in South-Gate Park now is left only a stele of founding autonomy, the origin of which is erected at the 10th anniversary of Yilan County. The stele has been erected on Oct. 10, 1960, just right on the very day of “Double Tenth” (National Day). The quality of this stele is granite; the front of which has fours words of “Founding Autonomy” in the Chinese written by the provincial governor then, Chi-Roi Chou, and the back side has the “Monument to Commemorate the Yilan County” written by Tzai-Tien Lin, the magistrate then.

We have seen the stele-body withering a little bit of, but the four words of the “Founding Autonomy” in Chinese are clear, as to the text of “Monument to Commemorate the Yilan County” carved on back side has been blurred and illegible. We found that the whole piece of the granite was carved the words after its plane has been chiseled as a dented surface. Teacher Jun-Lian explained, it is a specifically small design to avoid the rainwater flowing along the surface of the stele that might grow moss to damage the surface.
