 Mahowan anecdote

 (Illustrated by Paggy Ma)

“Mahowan” means “land of the wooden crate”. Legend has it that the house of a clan member caught fire. The family quickly fled from the burning abode in panic, but only then did the head of the household realize that a wooden crate holding valuable possessions was still inside. Crying out, “Mahowan!” he rushed back inside the burning house to retrieve the wooden create, but unfortunately succumbed to the flames. The villagers named the settlement Mahowan in memory of the tragic event. The pronunciation was later altered to “bahuan” after Retrocession Day.

High up on the Ma Yuan Mountains, where the original village was located, life proved to be extremely inconvenient, hence the government announced to the whole village that they would be moving to a new location, which eventually became the present site of Ma Yuan Elementary School.
