Mangamangayau is
the first ritual that
trains obedience, courage, daring, strength, and loyalty of teens, and
is the only ritual where teens are the leading characters. Thus,
mangamangayau is considered the core curriculum by the school every
year.

Features of
Mangamangayau
-
Most people thought that
Mangamangayau is about killing monkeys with a spear, so called it 'monkey killing'. However, that's only the custom of Kitapol. Rikavong used bow and arrow to shoot the monkeys. That's a difference between the two.
-
Why did we shoot monkeys? It is because monkeys look and sound like men. So boys were trained to kill monkeys, so they could go skull hunting later (skull hunting is now simply hunting).
-
In the past, young men had to kill real monkeys, real monkeys that ran freely on the tress (not tied up). The more monkeys one killed, the respect from tribal natives he would receive. They would be punished if they didn't kill any monkey. Now, it is against the law to kill wild animal. So straw monkeys are made.
-
Since battle was men's affair, so women were not allowed to be present at shooting event during
Mangamangayau.
-
There were no strict rules to wrestling, and no sand on the ground. The wrestling now was influenced by Japanese sumo.
