Battle at Bamboo Woods
|
Background
|
Kazekalan of Katipol was the dominating force in Puyuma Regional Conference, and collected tributes from other tribes. Kazekalan refused to give submission to the Dutch, so the Dutch attempted to build another in Taitung to conquer
Kazekalan.
The Dutch were surprisingly welcomed and assisted by the largest tribe on Puyuma plain, Panglan Puyuma. The Dutch gained force from Puyuma, and Puyuma built its reputation and privilege in Puyuma Regional Conference. The young warriors of Puyuma resisted paying tributes Kazekalan and triggered the intramural battle between the two largest tribes on Taitung plain.

Revolutionary change in history of Puyuma
|
During the season of tributing to Kazekalan, a group of Puyuma young men ate the tributes (hunted animals) out of discontent toward Kazekalan. Such action angered Kitapol and Kitapol start quarrel with Puyuma. Though the Chief of Puyuma had explained the cause of the incident and admitted the fault, Kitapol insisted a battle for the honor and pride of Kazekalan. At the end, Puyuma won the battle with bamboo weapons, and captured the Chief of Katipol, Karitak. Though he lost the battle, Karitak insisted Puyuma repaying the tribute. So Puyuma sliced Karitak and fed him his own flesh, said 'this is your tribute'. Karitak never surrendered and died at the end. After that battle, Katipol lost its hunting ground to Puyuma, and had to pay tributes to Puyuma every year. Other tribes then paid tributes to
Puyuma.
